Can someone explain to me why the woman shoots Roy Hobbs toward the beginnig of the movie? It occurs in a hotel room, she pulls a black veil over her face and then simply shoots him. Why?

She is a serial killer who has been attempting to kill the best player of the popular sports of that era. The movie makes reference to a boxer and some other sports figure recently murdered.

Check out this Wikipedia entry for some more detail and how she relates to the mythology that is retold in the story.

The movie doesn't explain very well that situation.
The reason is because the woman was obsessed with him. The movie is based on a book which is based on a real life event in which a female obsessed fan killed a pro baseball player. At the time many baseball players were fearful this was going to happen to them too.

Her character was a murder that chose to kill major athletes. She witnesses Hobbs strike out The Whammer, whom was more or less a Babe Ruth type player/character. She most likely was setting her sights on him. After seeing Hobbs strike him out decided to instead kill him.
