When playing a piano piece in 6/8 time. in some bars i have to play six quavers with my left hand and only 4 with my right hand (in the same amount of time as 3 quavers).

I've tried and tried and listened to a recording of the piece but cannot really get it.

Quavers 1 and 4 in the left will play simultaneously with quavers 1 and 3 in the right.

Quaver 2 in the right will play exactly between quavers 2 and 3 in the left; Quaver 4 in the right will play exactly between quavers 5 and 6 in the left.

Make sure that the tempo in the left is absolutely unwavering -- make it automatic.

If you're playing in 6/8, and need to play a duplet against the 3 eight notes, just think of each note in the duplet as a dotted eigth. Two dotted eigths equal 3 undotted eights.

Practice the piece slowly enough so you can feel the dotted rhythm (basically, subdivide the eights while you count). Once you can get the feel at the slow tempo, build up to the performance tempo.

I think I know what you mean in the counting! I was never that great at counting myself but after many years of practice I've learned that there is no PRECISE way of playing 3 quarters in the left hand and putting in the two quarters in the right hand at the same time. You just have to play the two notes in the right hand so that they are smudged comfortably between the counting time of the left hands notes... and listening to the song slowly will help you!

hope that wasn't too complicated, keep trying!!

Just keep trying. You can envision it in your head by listening. The next step is to train your body to do what your mind can picture. Practice, practice, practice.
