You're are selective with your choice of friends/associates. You don't just spend time with whomever is available. You prefer to choose friends/associates based on some set of values (eg. moral/spiritual, professional, etc).

It means you don't just hang around anybody. You hang around people that you've deemed as worth hanging around. It's usually a good thing, unless you're trying to be the friend of someone that doesn't want to hang out with you because they're fussy about the company they keep.

To me it means you will not hang out with people who have different morals then you do.I wouldn't go out with someone who didn't act polite in public.
