That was my late mothers' favourite saying and how I hated to hear her say it when I was a teenager but as it turns out ,for the most part she was right. I think it means people having the same values but not looking or acting the same but celebrating our differences.

Very often they do, as experienced by how people of the same nationality form their own groups, we know their are many that 'mix', this is only an example, there are a lot more analogies.

They flock together because of commonality. There has to be something that binds them together, usually common interests

As a general rule, yes.
People tend to be attracted to others that share similar interests.
examples: Clubs with a specific theme or goal, churches, musical tastes, and on and on.

Although we won't admit it, we all have something in common with most everyone. No two of my friends are alike and I love them all. I can't imagine having it any other way. I am very lucky .

Not at all. I could not have a more diverse group of close friends that are almost nothing like me, have different opinons from me, and are of different religions than mine.
