IT is SO DIFFICULT because when you have been so badly hurt by someone you trusted ... who trusted that you would be faithful, honest, caring, loving, etc ....

YOU DESTROYED that trust, that love, that belief in the basic 'goodness' they held up to that time in you,

They are left shattered (emotionally), crying the nights away until they can NOT cry anymore, they are ALONE at night, with the SAD realization that the ONLY person who wants that relationship is the ONE whose heart was broken into millions of shards and scattered to the wind ...

The one who you mentally (and otherwise) tortured with your actions, words, and deeds ...

THAT is why it is SO HARD to get someone's trust once again ...

The BELIEF is gone, the heart is broken, there is no going back to the 'way things were' ... and trust ... trust is EARNED through your actions/deeds and behaviors .. and once gone ... it is not going to come back anymore near the way it was PRIOR to whatever you did to break the trust.

How do I know this ... I am the SURVIVOR of a short disaster of a marriage to an abusive, violent sociopath .. and have put up barriers around me to PROTECT what is left of my heart ... because I can NOT trust ... (either my own feelings or others ... and sadly, this is from this short disaster of a marriage).

Now twenty years on ... I still have difficulty with TRUST .. and it carries over into the FIRST relationship I've had in 20 years .. just started dating again, and the Guy realizes that something really terrible happened ... and he is being very patient and kind. STILL ... not being able to trust my feelings is making me second guess everything ...

A person betrays one that put faith in them. They're different levels of trust. One can't compare. For ex: When my kids rode their bikes where they shouldn't of, they had to earn trust back from me. (that didn't take too long). When a friend breaks that trust barrier, it's a violation of a unwritten rule. It hurts and sometimes time is the best healer.

You mean after you have lost it?

It's no different than when dealing with animals. I don't mean that in a bad way- but any animal that has been harmed will mistrust humans. It doesn't always stay that way, though. A person or an animal can learn to trust again after being treated with kindness.

The reason why is because once you break a person's trust in you they are guarded with their heart, and soul, and emotions in an effort to avoid being hurt agin.

It seems that way, doesn't it. I especially hate it when I didn't DO what I was accused of to begin with and that it is not even someone I particularly like! It shouldn't really matter but it still does.

PS I cannot believe that everyone above me who went after you has NEVER made a mistake!!!

Because it's hard to break in the first place, and once you do, it just goes to show what a fool you are.

Winning it back should automatically be doubly hard.

I give you my trust the first time and expect you to live up to that. When you fail and hurt me, I do not know if you will do something to hurt me again.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

People learn by their mistakes and if you screwed someone over, they've learned not to trust you.

People don't like to be hurt, so of course we'll be wary of a situation which caused us pain in the past.
