'Hi' is an interjectory comment expressing either 'hello' or used to gain attention. It's probably derived from the word 'Hey' which is an internationally recognised sound when hailing someone although 'Hi' is more of a greeting. When I was younger we would always say 'Hiya' which is short for 'Hey you' and, again, is a form of greeting. 'The use of 'Hi' as a greeting is more informal than saying 'Hello' and is used extensively in email greetings even to comparative strangers.

It may be a contraction of archaic English "whole be thou". (used as a greeting) Or another source may be the phrase "Hail, Thou", as in the Bible; Luke 1:28 and Matthew 27:14.

The Germanic languages share an ancient morpheme that may be the origin of hello: English, hail; German, heil; Scandinavian, hell/heil; old Norse, heill. The core meaning may be something like "safe, healthy" and related to the English word "whole" (also to "holy", "whole" and "health").

Many stories date the first use of hello (with that spelling) to around the time of the invention of the telephone in 1876. It was however used in print in "Roughing It" by Mark Twain in 1872 (written between 1870 and 1871), so its first use must have predated the telephone.

Earlier uses can be found back to 1849. It was listed in dictionaries by 1883.

the first recorded reference of the word "hi" came from a Kansas Native american as a way to call attention. Scholars believe it is a variant of Medieval English from the words "hy, hey." from the year 1475 Americans chopping up the English langauge not taking the time to say hello.
Hi is an abrevation for hello. When "How are you?" is said quickly, it sounds like "hiya".
