well it would probably end the money flow to the middle east and end their strangle hold on energy dependent nations but it would probably be taken over by the energy companies and we will still be getting gouged on the price

The Oil Industry would be first in line to corner the market of it, then turn it around and sell it to us at astronomical prices. Remember when there was an oil shortage. Now there is more oil in the world then what we can pump out of the ground. But to keep prices inflated they will not build any new refineries. They lobby congress to go ahead and make up rules and regulations to make it difficult to build refineries. So you pay top dollar for a product that is in high demand but artificially reduced in availability. Where am I going with this you might ask? Who are the top contributors for solar energy? It is the Oil Industry with BP Petroleum leading the charge. When all those solar panels are lining up the Plains and deserts, guess who will be selling you the energy because the Oil Industry needs to get back there investments at inflated prices?

The search for alternative energy resources continues. Here in Nevada there were plans to erect the largest solar collector array in North America on land which was once part of the Nevada Test Site for nuclear weapons. It would have been capable of meeting 10% of the energy needs for the entire state. This particular tract of land had been checked out and there was the same background radiation as Denver on a sunny afternoon. Everyone thought the environmentalists and the other "tree hugger" groups would have been thrilled. But, they wanted to stop it. The reason was that they thought the chemical materials on the solar collectors were going to produce a gas which would be harmful to birds. There hasn't been a sighting of one bird in that area since the first atmospheric nuclear test in the 1950s!
I remember the first installation of windmills on Altamonte Pass southeast of San Francisco. Marvelous devices. There's always wind through that pass. Electricity being produced from a truly clean source. But, now the "environmentalists" want to shut it down along with others in the West because birds keep running into the moving vanes.
This tells me that any replacement for fossil fuels would generate enough hot air from all of the gripers that we could power everything from that human-produced energy source. LOL!

Actually there are already alternative fuels that could replace oil, the thing is as long as there are oil for us to use, oil companies will never consider using alternative fuels. Oil industry is a trillion dollars business, government and businessmen will not allow that to money to go away.
FYI Hydrogen is the most abundant element in this planet and doesn't have byproduct like oil (carbon), its byproduct is water.

We have other sources of energy, but the use has been stiffled by oil companies. However, all is not lost. Someday, fossil fuel will be depleated from the earth and we will be forced to use other sources. Not in our lifetime, but in the future. It will happen.

The people that own shares in and operate the energy companies would own and run the new source of energy, same as it ever was. The stone age didn't end because we ran out of stone.

we've some truly surprising batteries, however the oil companies administration the shares, so we gained't use them for something. whilst oil runs out, we are going to surprisingly lots ought to finally shrug off oil's effect over us and hit upon a clean potential source (and a plastic replace, through fact plastic is made out of oil).
