Revising may change to the point of view, the information you use to support the thesis, even the conclusion. Editing isn't supposed to change any of those things.

Very different. There is editing in revising an essay but not the other way round. its really quite simple. Whenever your teacher, or lecturer gives you an assignment and you totally mess it up, then you need to revise it. On the other hand, if you think you have managed to answer all the task's requirements but still not happywith it, you edit.

To be certain whether your essay needs revising or editing, try giving it to a friend and ask his/her honest opinion about it. if your friend feels that it deserves anything between C+ and A-, you only need to edit it. If it is anything less than that, you need to revise it.

Editing is like fine tuning an engine before race day. revising is like that car needs an over-haul. Don't even dream to take it to a race track. Good luck.

I'm not an English major so I'm not certain, but I believe that editing is about checking for grammar and spelling errors and checking all the technical stuff (is it MLA if it's supposed to be?), while revising is more about the content: adding to the essay or taking out unnecessary remarks and sentences.

I'm no English guru, but my guess is that editing deals more with grammer and punctuation, and revising deals more with adding or subtracting information from your essay.

modifying could be to bypass back and suitable what you initially had written, and to revise could be to bypass back and make some updates or changes from what you had initially wrote.
