Depends on where it is. If it is in a yard, or near other structures that could be damaged, then yes, you need to hire a proffessional who will cut it in sections. If it is in a field or somewhere where there is nothing around for it to fall on, then it could be done much more easily and cheaper, simply by cutting the whole thing down at once. I suggest selling the tree for firewood (or using it yourself) to help offset some of the costs, if it is not rotten.

The cutting part is pretty straight forward, it's the landing that takes more than just a little skill. You generally don't need to bother with the lap wood (branches) unless the lumber is of value or they're big enough to do damage in there own right. Get at least three estimates and get them to detail the entire process, including what will happen if the tree is internally decayed and ask to see proof of insurance. RScott

We just had a huge tree removed in the spring. They started at the top and removed limbs and then worked their way down to the bottom of the tree removing it in sections. They ground the stump and by the time they left, you could not tell they had even done any work in my yard. They cleaned everything up.

Large trees must be cut in sections from the top down, most likely you'll have to hire someone or have a 60 in. bar on your chainsaw lol.

Hire it done. The pros have all the equipment to do it quickly and safely. It only takes one chunk of a tree falling the wrong way to completely ruin your day.

Start at the top and work your way down. When your at the top, rope off the branches before you cut them. you can then lower them safely to the ground.
