I watched it quite a while ago, but it's about basically a student who meets his old teacher in hospital (he has had some kinda accident/illness that isnt too serious or is a doctor or something...) and she is dying. At the end he manages to track down old classmates to all come and see this woman so that she can realise how much she's taught etc. It's after they have a convo about funerals being stupid because the dead person is never going to know about all the praise...
If anyone could help, I'd be very grateful. It's quite an old film.

sounds like it could be Gross Anatomy.. although they were still her students when she got sick..
Mathew Modine plays a med student who is falling for one of his gross anatomy partners.. his teacher is being harder on him than she seems on the others.. and he is being as difficult as he can.. In one extreme case of insolence (and mistreatment in diagnosing a patient) she gives him a case file with no name on it.. He figures out who's it was just weeks before she dies... he tries to convince her that he would make it when she tells him that she knows he has the ability.. I'd put up a clip, but can't find one.. and the imdb page tells more about the other relationship with the girl than the teacher..
