I met someone in the grocery store the other day with a 2 year old girl named Porsche.

She actually DID come out and say "she's named after the car", so it isn't Portia.

Never! My husband's step sister has a granddaughter named Lexus (after the car), a grandson named Triton and another named Vortex (or is it Vortek?). Very redneck!

are you sure the girl was named after the car?

Portia is pronounced just like the car but has a more ancient derivation - - - read on:
Narrative: This ancient Roman family name may well derive from porcus (''pig''), and so serves as a reminder of the Roman aristocracy's agricultural roots.

Portia was the name of the valiant wife of Brutus, the most distinguished of those men who felt compelled to assassinate Julius Caesar to save the Roman Republic. She is an important character in Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar, but not so prominent as a fictional namesake of hers in The Merchant of Venice. That Portia, disguised as a male lawyer, successfully pleads for her husband's life with the speech beginning ''The quality of mercy is not strained...''

Many car names were based on something else- a person, place or thing, so yes, perhaps I would give my child the same name as a car, but he/she would not be named after the car, per se, they'd be given a name that sounded pleasing, and based on that names original meanings, if any (and often NOT a car. Dakota was a state (2 actually) before it was a pick up truck.

The thing these days is that everyone wants their kids to have unique names. For girls this is fairly easy, as you can name a girl after an inanimate object and it sounds cute, like Porsche, Apple, or even one young lady I met named Wheat. we even name our girls after seasons, months, and ideas (like Hope, Charity, or Faith). Boys however are more difficult... I mean you can't name your son Lampshade or Saturday or anything.

Personally, I understand not wanting your kid to be one of ten Sarahs or Johns, but maybe we are getting a little crazy about this!

Oh my gosh..... I so would not. This is funny because my husband loves expensive and exotic cars and wants to name our kids after them. I say firmly , NO!

Some of the names my husband has said:
Mercedes- not so bad
Porsche- no way
Audi- cutish
Enzo (like Enzo Ferrari)- NO
Ferrari--- no.
Aston -- okay, this one is the coolest.

No, but I'm sure someone else would. By the way, Porsche's a popular name too, so I wouldn't mind.

A child's name is something special. It is a shame that parent's overlook this sometimes. Hopefully in the future you can influence your friends and prevent them from making such an egregious error in the future.

Well what about all the kids running around named Dakota, which is what my husband drives.

You never see kids named Chevette, LaSabre, or Saturn, or Toyota.
