I can not speak to any apartments in particular on the south side as I rarely travel south of Durango Street.
There are, however, several nice areas on the south side of San Antonio, and new contruction of neighborhoods is occuring all the time.
As far as crime and safety goes, a review of the crime statistics by zipcode show that the north side has a crime rate 124% of the national average. The west/northwest side (in the Sea World Area) has the lowest crime rate, and the southside and east side areas are both above the national average. Just reading the blanket statistics and the summary numbers it would seem the best place to live would be west/northwest. However, the west/northwest side has the highest level of murders and rapes, but the lowest level of "reported thefts". The North side especially the area already mentioned around 281/1604 with it's high rate of crime has the lowest level of violent crimes (murder/rape) in the city and a higher level of reported crime significantly theft and shoplifting. The southside has an above the national average level of violent crime.
So every area of a major city has it's problems, just decide do you want your car stereo and accessories gone or your life.
Incidentally, I now live in north central San Antonio. I have to agree with the first responder about the apartments around here, but I would also suggest an apartment in Northwest SA out the I 10 corridor, there are several great apartments there and I 10 goes straight downtown and merges with I 35 to the southside.
Good Luck in SATX
But if you move here you have to love the Spurs (it's a city ordinance)

TAKE THE JOB!!! But, don't live on the south side. Yeah, they're building new homes and businesses but there is potential for the current south side residents to move on in and ruin the new neighborhoods with vandalism, gang activity, and drugs. (The typical south side activity)
If you move to the north side (outside loop 410) you'll find a lot of apartments. It's about 26 miles from the good neighborhoods in San Antonio. If you live anywhere near 281 North you can just take 281 into downtown, exit I-35 and you're on your way. The traffic isn't that bad on those highways.
There is some really nice apartments off of 281 @ 1604. That is a wonderful area with no vandalism, gangs, or low-life people and a lot of shopping and a hospital near by. It's close to everything. I grew up in that part of town and we never had anything happen around there. It's a very safe area.

The south side is undergoing tremendous growth and change. Not only is there the Toyota plant, but TAMU is looking at locations for a campus on the south side. The south side was long neglected, but things are picking up. I hate to tell the guy this, but there are "bad influences on every side of SA. Plus, 281/1604 North is nothing but a parking lot every morning/afternoon. I should know, I have to run the gauntlet every day, 5 days a week. Come for a visit, look over all places around SA, and pick what you like!

I live on the SE side of town... It's a very nice mix of country and city... I don't really know why some people are saying bad things about this side of town, but I have lived here for 23 years, and I have never seen a single act of violence in this area.
It is also the most reasonably priced area in SA.
Traffic going to Toyota from the North side is HORRID! I got stuck in it on Tuesday and was late for a mediation training for elem. school students. A suggestion that i have is to look for some duplexes and four-plexes in the area... They are privately owned so they wouldn't be reviewed, but there are some nice ones around here.

They are building some nice condo's south of downtown. I totally disagree with Kevin about the south side of San Antonio, I am a member of the Southside Chamber of Commerce and not all residents of the southside are drug addicts, child abusers or welfare cheats. That is just a narrow minded viewpoint.
My son in law works for Toyota and is building a custom home near the plant.
Note to Liz: Its nice to see another person tell the truth about the southside. There are a lot of great people who are proud to live on the southside.

"(The typical south side activity)" - Oh dear, you are so wrong. I live on the South Side of town, and I have never witnessed any "gang activity" problems.
In response to the asker, I'd very much recommend moving to the South Side, mainly because the traffic is so heavy on the North Side. The South Side is as "unsafe" as anywhere else in San Antonio. I'm not sure where you are getting your information, but most of the families here have lived in this community for decades, and they are very friendly. Please do not let anyone scare you about this side of town!

Live in a small town south or southeast of the city. They are very nice and the traffic is much better. that's what I would do.

I'm very surprised that you were even considered for the job since when they started hiring, Toyota announced that they would only hire people living in certain zip codes. Check that out first.
