When the ac adapter is plugged into my laptop, it powers up and then powers off at different periods of times; not to exceed 2 minutes. The adapter will charge the battery and the laptop will stay on using battery power. Any Ideas?

Possible intermittent connection due to something loose or broken on the AC adapter connector.

Presumably it goes into standby when not being used. This is a setting for power management. Go to control panel, choose power options (in category view choose performance & maint. first),click power schemes, adjust times to suit your needs under plugged in and/or running on batteries, click ok. While you are there, check under alarms and make sure it goes into hibernate when battery critical. If hibernate is not an option, go to the end tab and enable hibernation and make sure you have enough disk space. Hibernation copies the entire content of memory to disk then shuts down. This can save a lot of time booting up if you are without a fast machine, instead of shutdown try windows key then u then h then enter.
