"Tenor" (R.I.P. Lucciano) is a very strange word. On the one hand it is a synonym for "transcript" - an exact copy. On the other, it means "gist" or "drift" - an inexact summary of the general meaning, intent or tone. On the face of it, a self-contradicition.
