38 and C are two different animals - don't confuse your cats and dogs. Keep band and cup sizes as separate and distinct considerations.
Bra size is a ratio not an incremental state - you don't necessarily progress from 38C to 40C or 38D though either is possible.
There are several possibilities to consider:
* If your band is too tight but your cup is fine then the next size is 40B (the cup in a 38C and 40B are the same, the only difference is band)
* If your band is fine but the cups are too small then increase to 38D. There would be no reason to increase band size.
* If your band is too tight AND your cup is too small then consider increase to 40C (the cup in a 40C is the same as the cup in a 38D)
A 38DD is two cup sizes larger than your 38C and three cup sizes larger than a 40C.
Best bet - get fitted. ☺

38C relates to your chest width, and breast size! When you measure your chest for a bra, it may be 34", but you have to add 4 inches (or 5 inches if your original number is odd), so therefore you would be a 38. When you measure across your nipples for the cup size, however many inches it goes beyond the calculated chest size is your size. 1 = A, 2 = B, 3 = C, etc. The cup sizes are basically endless. They go as small as AAA (typically a training bra), and as large as into the mid-alphabet letters! Some of the largest breasts in recorded history were in the Ks, I believe!

Well first off the "C" stands for the cup size and the "38" stands for the cirumfernce of your torso. Cup sizes range from AA to FFF and the torso sizes range from 28 to somehwere in the 50's and goes up in incriments of 2.....most sizes have to be ordered from special catalogs (Frederick's of Hollywood has a great range of sizes).
So to answer your question the next size in a C cup would be a 40C and the size after that would be a 42C. Any back size over a 36 or a 38 and under 32 is impossible to find in a depeartment store. Also any cup size over a D or DD is also impossible to find.

Bands sizes are even numbers - 38, 40, 42, etc. [ except for a few odd numbered ones ]
Cup sizes are C, D, DD, F, G, etc.

depending on which measurement you are incrementing, it would either be 38D if you are changing cup size, or 40C if you are adjusting ribcage measurement
