Do what Jim suggested.
If his eyes are OK, then get a book for his age range, with any subject that interests him, and ask him which character he would like to be.

You can choose to be another character and others can be one also.

Then each one orally read their respective parts. Use inflections intended by the author.

Explain to him that by reading, he can travel anywhere in the world and be anyone he wants to be, in the book.

You can have fun by starting with comics or funny papers, each one assume a character and read their parts.
Record all that on tape.
Play it back. It can be hilarious.

Take him to an eye doctor that will do a Sensory motor exam. A lot of places don't do that type of exam so you have to ask for it. Most kids that don't like reading have eye problems.

You might have him tested to see if there is a medical problem (such as dyslexia) that is making reading difficult or challenging.
