Have you ever cooked one in a brown paper sack? Do you stuff your bird?
I still like to cook my bird the old fashioned way, except with a twist. I cook it in a brown paper sack, it comes out very moist. I also stuff my bird.

I agree, shooting up a turkey and deep frying it is awesome as well. Our family is so large we usually cook two birds. My husband will cook the fryed bird and I cook one the old fashioned way.
We normally have a large aray of seafood as well.
The family gathers in Texas and usually it's cold outside.
I will cook a pot of conch chowder or a pot of gumbo:~)

never heard of doing it in a paper sack - would sure like to know know if you could email me.

i do mine in a cooking bag - it doesn't take as long that way.

stuffing has to be in a separate dish or hubby won't eat the turkey - he doesn't like stuffing. i know - how un-American can you get !!?

Yes, I cook it in the oven..dressing separate because I cook the turkey the day before, refrigerate overnight, then cut it up and reheat it, that's why the dressing is separate..do it the day of.
It makes the day go so much smoother and I am not tied to the kitchen doing all the last minute things with someone in my way cutting the turkey...
Was fun the old fashioned way when I was young..now I prefer it this way, and the turkey has never been dry..

Never had one deep fried,,would like to try it sometime..

have baked an apple pie in a brown paper bag,,very "appley" tasting,,recommend it

The one and only time I cooked the turkey was by following the cookbook instructions. Unfortunately, they did NOT put a comma where they should have and I ended up cooking it upside-down. My family decided I shouldn't cook after that.....

The next time, many years later, my brother tried frying it in peanut oil. It only takes 20 minutes. At least, that's what the instructions said. The poor little wings and legs looked and cracked like paper. The skin was like orange paper, and the meat for at least 1/4 inch in (from the outside and inside) was too tough to eat. But there was a LITTLE BIT inbetween that was edible. (Sigh.) That was a lean year.....

Now my ex-sister-in-law did tell me a secret that works. When you make the box stuffing, add twice as much liquid. That seemed to work really well!

Now....would you like me to come to your house to cook for you? (Grin!)

the best turkey i ever had was whole barbecued. you put some kind of pipe up the center and stand it up, then it cooks with the cover on, for the most part. but i always cook it cut up in a fast convection oven, salt and spice brined the night before, white meat in the center of the pan, dark on the outside, no extra salt on top. comes out very moist, and evenly cooked, which is a problems with the traditional way, imo

I cook mine in the oven stuffed. While it's roasting, I cover
the outside with foil until it's done. I baste it. Then I let it brown. It is very moist that way.
