Tobacco products average about 48 million dollars income for the government. Surprisingly enough chew tobacco sells more than cigarettes in most states, but usually only in the US. Tobacco products will never be illegal but the government should use a part of the 48 million to provide quiting centers for people that are addicted.

We have seen what happens when substances are made illegal. It makes for an underworld of gangsters and criminals, costs millions of dollars to control and a losing battle. We have seen that with alcohol, marijuana and hard drugs in the USA. If the government makes tobacco illegal, then what about high fat and sugary foods. Where does it stop. Does the government always have to be the parent and police everything that is not good for the bodies of adult people? People who want drugs will get them no matter what. And maybe some of these things should be controlled medically.. But like I said, where does it stop?

This is a very good question. I'm a smoker and I got to tell off a doctor yesterday. I have some clogged arteries and when I took off my shirt to have tests done, I took out my cigarettes and she said "There's the reason for your clogged arteries". I looked her straight in the eye and said don't give me that BullShlt! My brother has had to have 4 heart stints put in and he never smoked a day in his life. Then she agreed that it's genetics rather than smoking. I think it should be the decision of each person whether they want to smoke or not and it should be trated as such.
Now off my rant and bragging, I don't have any problem not smoking where it bothers others but this smoking ban that the country is forcing down our throats is nothing more than Naziistic at best. I own a business and they are forcing me to keep a no smoking policy in MY OWN BUSINESS. That's just totally screwed

Yes, they should be legal. If they weren't legal, people would still smoke and then they would buy them on the black market. No taxes would be paid and just some drug dealer kind of person would be making money on this product. It's not illegal to manufacture and sell them and we should leave it that way. Even if you aren't a smoker and don't like smoke, eventually these "enjoyment police" will get around to you. Maybe you like Twinkies and you will have those taken away from you.

I think Kazuma's tax estimate is way low. This is the reason they will never be illegal. Thing I hate is those who really believe those taxes go to help people who get sick from tobacco. In Florida ( one of the big anti tobacco States as far as smoking in public places) the majority of their pension plans have stock in tobacco companies. This includes the Teachers union.

No they should not. We are adults and should be able to use tobacco products if that is what we choose. It is not the government's role to make illegal everything that might harm us. I do not want to live in a police state.
Why don't you think about what is in your food before you worry about what other adults do to themselves? Are you happy eating the chemicals and pesticides that cause cancer and are allowed into our food supply without our knowledge? Maybe that is a fight we should take up first.

They should be legal. It's true that smoking can cause diseases like emphysema and cancer but they don't make a person intoxicated or impaired like marijuana does. I have been a smoker for 45 years and it's addictive. The government keeps taxing it and we continue buy cigarettes. I don't know of anyone who is paying my medical bills except for me, so that isn't an excuse for making it illegal.

No. Prohibition is wrong for a government dedicated to the concepts of freedom and liberty.
It is neither the place of the government, nor of the citizens to protect people from themselves. That is the path to tyranny.
