Dems favor 'forced' anything on the American citizens. Once it is MANDATORY rather than voluntary- it will bring them closer to their socialist goals.

Politicians want a job just as you want a job. They have to be elected to the jib so they do not say what they believe they say what they think you want to hear so you will vote for them.
Democrat or Republican that says what you do ot want to hear will ot get elected.
Iraq is the big battle ground now but in a few months it will not be. The issues will change after the first of the year. Both parties know very well that the troops can't be brought home for several years yet. This is a fact that no mater if it is democrat or republican the troops will have to stay there for some time yet.
Seems rather strange to me that everyone is so upset about nearly four thousand Americans have died over there since this started. At the same time over thirty thousand of you have died on the Nations roads each year. That amounts to the total number of troops over there now and more. When are you going to do something about what is happening at your front door.
I know you won't do anything at all. You do not care. You are only mouthing what you think you should.

The draft is just a political tool used to put pressure on others. Most politicians neither want the draft nor see it as necessary.
The Democrats claim it is necessary to continue military operations. They want to blame Bush, and be able to tell the public "see what he forced us to!"
The Republicans fears the draft because they no it would cause an uproar and the backlash would potentially fall on Bush.
You have probably noticed the rhetoric has died lately as the Republicans are on shaky ground already with voters. The Democrats, at this point, could only hurt themselves with this issue.

Dan W got it right. Democrats know that a vast majority of Americans oppose the draft. So by implying to continue to support the war, a draft will be needed, they can drum up support to withdraw from the war to avoid the draft. Reverse Psychology at it's best. The problem is, the Republicans are not buying into this theory and therefore it has not gained any momentum. The Republicans have steadfastly maintained that no draft is going to happen.

Probably for the same reason certain Republicans claim that Democrats do not want to serve their country and should just stay out of the Iraqi war. The Democrats understand that once the draft is on the table, the idea of an all volunteer military will be negated and people will actually stop supporting military intervention in the middle east. See Vietnam.

The Democrats favor a draft because they believe it will end the war in Iraq and prevent other ill-advised wars in the future. Right now, the military is composed of volunteers. If the draft were reinstituted, and applied even-handedly across society, lots of people (including you and me) might be subject to service in Iraq. If that were to happen -- if people thought that the war in Iraq might affect them, or their husbands, or their brothers, or their children, they would most likely demand an end to it. There are many people who believe that the existence of the draft is what hastened the end of the Vietnam War, because they were not willing to send their children to die in a senseless, never-ending jungle conflict that served no interest of the United States and for which there was no discernable strategy.
In Iraq, U.S. troops are caught in a sectarian civil war that has been going on for centuries. But as long as only persons who volunteered for the military are having to fight there, the rest of us are more likely to ignore it. If the draft were brought back, and everyone of military age were required to serve, and thus were subject to service in Iraq, you would see much stronger opposition to the war and a speedier end.

The Democrats have successfully promoted the idea that the Republicans are secretly planning to reinstate the draft.
That being said, we will need to institute compulsory military service for everyone w/in 5-10 years. Possibly between high school and college - possibly afterwards.
As the Islamic world grows we're going to start looking more and more like Israel. A dangerous mistake on our enemies' part since we have a lot more weapons.

A draft would make it difficult for hawkish administrations to go to war. Less than .5 per cent of the population have their asses on the line in Iraq. The rest are free to play war games with other parents' sons.
Since the GOP has more hawks than the Democrats, they would be less likely to advocate a draft. If more of the population is affected by a declaration of war, then that declaration would be far more controversial than our decision to go to Iraq.
Those who would blame Republicans for advocating a draft are simply wrong. But their opposition to a draft is not based on a fervent commitment to democracy. They are acting pragmatically to giver hawkish administrations the werewithal to use military force without worrying about the backlash.

A volunteer military severely limits the ability of anti-war protesters to use the soldiers as an emotional pawn to forward their agenda...
If we had a conscript military they could scream, "Stop sending the unwilling to die for _________ "
Liberals understand that they cannot control and/or use for political gain those citizens that are independent and make their own choices. Therefore, under the surface of their platform, they tend toward legislation that increases dependence on the government and reduces actual choices.

Common sense would dictate that if your are for the war in Iraq, you must be in favor to the draft, however that isn't the case. The return of the draft was first proposed by Charles Rangel saying fighting forces should more closely reflect the economic makeup of the nation. His point was that kids from rich well off families should be doing their patriotic duty the same way as kids from the poor and middle classes
