Because the religious right wing is now using it's wealth to influence politicians to get their agenda passed into law. It's not enough to live their lives by their beliefs; they ant to force their beliefs on others as well.

Eventually, it will not be an issue when science catches up and "morning after pills" become the standard.

The abortion issue does a few things for us:

It gives us a window into the soul of the candidate.

It shows how consistent the candidate may or may not be.

It gives us an idea what the supreme court may look like under the candidates administration if he should win.

It shows us to what lengths a candidate might go to court a specific voting group eg; Liberals, Christian conservatives, women, Clergy etc.

Although there is not much a candidate can specifically do to resolve the issue it is pivotal because it is a position that radiates out to many more.

For the most part we've been relatively issue free as a country.

Now that we have some real issues (e.g. a shooting war in Iraq) I don't think abortion is going to carry the weight that the NARAL and NOW crowd would like it to.

I'm anti-pro-choice people, but this is really a personal issue that doesn't belong in the political arena.

Because it's something the general public knows. If you start talking about foreign policies or the budget or congressional spending, they have no idea what's going on. But they for sure know whether they agree with abortion or not! That's a feeling. The rest has to do with knowledge, research, and understanding of complex situations.

Becuase to many is a matter of life and death. The ones who oppose abortion see it as slaughter so for them it is a very prominent issue in the elections, one that can't be compromised. For the ones who don't think abortion is murder, it frustrates them to see how many care about this issue so much. For they see whole array of problems that the U.S. has to care about rather than abortion.

Because people make it a political issue. I'm not sure how many people vote for a candidate based on only one issue.

In many countries, ESPECIALLY the US, the government and policies of the country are based on/blinded by religious ideals and many law makers pass and veto laws based on their religious views. Even voters use their religion when it comes to voting on certain laws/policies. They use religion as a means to think for them. That being said, there are those with no religious affiliation who are against it too.

Because abortion is a highly emotional issue, and much easier to get people riled up about than, say, filthy drinking water, low wages, or Corporate Welfare.

Abortion is a "political issue" because many people (including me) believe that it is the destruction of human life. Life begins at conception. A candidate who lacks the ability to discern that is generally morally unfit to lead.
