It may still be, as it is rather jolting

It is said by some to be the scariest movie ever made. Since it has a strong basis in the Catholic religion, it may have a stronger effect on Catholics or those whose faith in God is more prevalent.

Todays horror movies are no comparison. They are just blood and guts. True horror affects your mind deep down. Yes it is horrific to see someone get hacked to pieces, but I think it it more horrifying to know that a soul can possibly be taken over by an evil entity.

The movies of old really played on our fears and anxieties. Does anyone really fear being kidnapped by mutants in the desert and tortured? I dont think so. Does anyone fear that their body and soul could be possessed by the devil? I think more so than being tortured by nuclear mutated/incestuous mutant freaks.

See: all the original versions of: The Omen I and II, the Exorcist, Psycho, The Birds, etc. And take them for how and when they were made. Then come back and tell us what is more scary.

Definitely one of the scariest movies ever. You know how they're remaking all the old 70s horror classics (Like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Omen). Well, they can't remake The Exorcist because nobody could do it as good. Instead they rereleased the original in the theaters. It's simply the creepiest movie you could ever watch - even after all this time.

Not really scary by today's standards but when I was a kid in the 70's, I somehow was allowed to see it. I'm Catholic and when we would go to Mass after that, I couldn't look at any of the statues, it was really disturbing to me. Now, not so much.

I have to admit, I couldn't wait to see it. I had a whole "classic scary movie night" years ago. We rented The Shining, Rosemary's Baby, and The Exorcist. I don't think I've laughed harder at a scary movie then I did at Exorcist.

Regan wasn't scary, but the eerie transformation of her bedroom, the split-second flash of the demonic face and the demonic silhouette in the bedroom sure spooked me. Some non-Christians I know didn't find the movie scary at all. If they don't believe in God, how can they be afraid of the Devil?

not realy, some parts can make you feel a bit icky. Knowing it was based on a true story and about 2 people died during the making of the film is a bit scary.

it was scary when you were a child but compared the horror movies of late, the Exorcist is almost like a bed time story.

It was disturbing the first time I saw it when it was released. I do not enjoy watching projectile body fluids. Now, when I see parts of the movie, it seems juvenile.
