In this modern day and age, what does "my country" really mean ? A people of similar culture ? Maybe. The USA is a country I visited a where I lived for sometime and a country I learned to love. The USA is probably the most beautiful country in the world. You need to visit it to REALLY understand what I mean. Within t the context of my question, let me say this -- I find it a little hard to see the USA as a country within the popular definition of "country" . They are a society of COMPLETELY different people, customs and mentality. It is a society completely devided by social class, colour (sorry... 'color'). My perception is that each American is first white, then of some social/financial class and then, at the bottom, American. How can anyone be proud of being American and less than 100 years ago hang fellow (black) Americans from trees and less than 15 years ago sustain anything like the LA riots (the outcome of trial of Rodney King). I'd love to read comments from Americans

I know what you mean. I struggle with Nationality and ethnicity. (not favouring one over the other )however, I do feel we should be be accepting other cultures and as a whole share in these ethnic festivals. Often I feel a lack of cultural heritige leads to all sorts of discrimination, poeple with out an ethnic / cultural identity to share with the rest of the world, I feel any way, become frustrated and insecure about who they are where they come from (yes yes not all of course) which leads to sectarianism, racism, anti smeiatism ........ Funny enough though in the irish langauge you can live in a country but you can`t own it.

Country: A state or a nation.

I agree that our country does not fit the definition of the word "nation" very closely at all. However, it is pretty much a "state".

Based on what I've seen and read about, economic class is more significant than colo(u)r. Some people may disagree about this, though. However both factors continue to play a role in society.

As for your question regarding how we can be so violent to each other, I don't know how to answer that exactly except that it results from the dark side of human nature.

Hi Red Chrome: My Country is England - I am an old lady! - and I am English. I have met few Americans some really nice some not - same as everywhere else. I remember being very very surprised by the Birmingham Riots in America. I had no idea that a civilised country did not permit all its people to mix in, use facilities in common and sit where they liked on buses. Not something to be proud of. However I have met Americans who can be generous to the point of naivety

Being that I have travelled allot I usually refer to my country being the country I am currently living in. I am British by birth but, quite honestly, in recent years I have not been proud of the fact and will only admit it if pushed. I am really sorry if this offends anyone.

It's easy to sit in the country you were born in and never leave. It's easy to see the world from one prospective. When you leave the US to travel you have an opportunity to hear the voices of the world. And when you return to the US you learn to appreciate the liberties we take for granted. You see the faults of our nation. You will most likely take more responsibility and vote, because it is your country.
