I would like some advice as to what to do about my lawn so that it looks good in the spring. Right now the lawn has a lot of weeds and some bare spots. Basically, I need to grow new grass, feed what's already there and prevent weeds in the spring but I don't know when and what I should apply to do this. Please don't recommend a lawn care company. I am not looking for the perfect lawn but I know there are things I could be doing to improve it. I have a spreader and I'm all ready to get to work. Thanks for your help!

I live on Long Island and I like Scotts Products. Now is the time to use WinterGuard with Weed Killer. It provides your lawn with fall nutrients and kills some of your remaining weeds that won't die off. Read the directions, I think you should not put the fertilizer on the spots you want to plant new seed with. To seed in the bare spots, get some fresh top soil and mix in the seeds and keep it moist. - You could also go to scotts.com and sign up for their reminder service. Basically you tell them where you live and the type of lawn you have and they send recommendations on when to fertilize, seed, etc.. Good luck!

Get some grass seed and throw down then fertilize it with something like a 10-10-10 fertilizer for the whole lawn. Don't worry about the weeds this time of year they are about dead anyway.. next spring you can get some fertilizer that has weed killer in it. Then next year get more fertilizer like 13-13-13 and use on it about 3 times a year about every 6 weeks or so this will really help thicken up your lawn.
