Why on so many motorbike headlamps is only one side working?
This has puzzled me for years!!!

One side is a dipped headlight, and the other one is main beam.......

Some bikes (especially Yamahas) have one headligfht for standard beam, and the other headlight for high beam. It makes sense, if you think about it (saves one bulb and one light circuit), and bikes usually have their standard beam 'hard wired', so that it is on all the time (safety reasons). Of course, only one headlight is not safe on an automobile.
My Yamaha FZ6 was like that, which was handy for my mates if they were waiting up ahead, because they coluld recognise my bike, before they could see it was me.

Only one side is on because that's the low beam, if you see a guy with both on it's the high beam. I'm not 100%, but I think you can get kits now that willl make both lights come on for the low beam.

because motorbikes are not as wide as a car and need two
