I found what I thought was a spider, but it may be a tick. It was the strangest thing I've seen as far as that type of insect goes. It was black, about the size of an eraser tip, sort of flat, a little oval, it has spidery looking legs, but the top of it was flat and lemon yellow, it actually looked like a piece of lemon peel, it also had spikes along the edge of it's yellow top, almost like a crown. Does anyone have any idea what kind of insect this was?

sounds like a juvenile spiny orb weaver spider.
Here is a pic for comparison. This is just one image. Spiny Orb weavers come in many colors.

Oh, you don't need to worry about them. They are harmless garden spiders.

ticks may have as much as eight legs too. however the form of ticks differs from that of spiders. ticks resemble the form of a watermelon seed and would be black, or brown, or i consider even a combination. spiders nevertheless are available in many exclusive colours. and continually have eight legs. theres person who even appears like an ant. however i doubt that is what you assert established in your description. so its obviously a few form of spider. i did a little bit watching round on wikipedia and determined anything near that has yellow, however its too significant . theres anything like a banana spider (named for its colour of the internet or anything) however i do not see some thing with spikes on its head. however obviously what you noticed was once a spider. the satisfactory factor to do is to depart it on my own, bites harm whether or not is toxic or now not. and that i hate spiders, so it was once all ugh to me while i used to be watching on the photos... lol, however i like finding out new matters approximately animals (and bugs too)

How many legs did it have? That'll tell ya. Arachnids (spiders) have 8 legs. Insects (including ticks) only have 6.

It's a spiny orb weaver, about 90% sure, because I don't know of any North American ticks that have a yellow back.
