Because of the mice in the heels?

Several reasons: they are cheaply made and the steel shank is rubbing on something. Or they are too large and the heel is wiggling against shank. That means the heel is about to snap backwards. Finally there's a defect in the way the heel is attached to the steel shank plate. It's almost always related to the steel shank and the heel and usually a quality issue. More expensive shoes don't have that issue unless the shoe is too large for the foot, which happens when a wide foot is put in a too long shoe. Better to buy a wider shoe than a longer shoe, then the heel of the foot and the ball of the foot are in the correct places in relation to the footbed of the shoe.

Mine don't either - maybe it is a poorly made shoe.
