I had it during the 18th week of pregnancy and the result was 1/1.200. I am 34 years old. Does anyone know if this is good?

one in 1,200 is really great

i just had the nuchal fold ultrasound for my kids,, one of them had a 1, in 700 chance, they didnt even do further tests for that! so your result is pretty good

good luck with your pregnancy

Well, 1 in 200 is the same risk as a woman who is 38. Is that enough to warrant additional testing? I don't know. Perhaps. You'll have to ask your doctor. According to one site (It refuses to link), 1 in 200 is actually the cutoff for offering amnio. This does not mean that you actually have a fetus with Downs but just puts you in the category for possibly more testing.

I'm in the category where I would be offered CVS (and take it), but AFP is still used to determine risk for spina bifida.

Also, a poster above I assume had a wrong term. Amnio is 100% accurate in diagnosing Downs as it uses actual DNA. A study came out earlier this year that amnio is actually less risky than in the past since they all use ultrasound to perform it now.

The AFP is not a test for Down's, it is a test for the risk of Down's and neural tube diseases. It is HIGHLY subjective..ie, being a week off on the conception date will show an increased risk for certain disorders. The results are also skewed by multiples. I think it scares more women, than anything and causes many needless amnio's. I don't even opt to take it anymore. Pregnancy is stressful enough without the results of a very subjective and faulty screening test haning over your head.

It means that you have a low chance of having a down syndromw baby. My genetic counselor wanted me to have one done at 18 weeks but I refused. I would not abort a baby based on information on an amnio test because they are not always accurate. I know several women personally that have had their test come back VERY high risk for D-syndrome and their babies were perfectly normal.

idk what the results were on mine! I had it with my first child and I stayed a nervous wreck until the results came back good my doctor laughed and said "if they had been bad would you have aborted?" I said "no" and so with my second pregnancy he wouldn't even let me have the test done! he said it was just too much stress on me, and the baby worrying about something I couldn't change!

No, I didn't see the point in knowing that kind of stuff. I will love my child no matter what.
