We will find out later this month. I think they could.

The Tigers do have the fortitude and gumption, they proved that last year. The just don't have the pitching this year. Even Verlander, who pitched a no-hitter this year has had just an average year. As much criticism as the Yankees' pitching gets, the Tigers' is much worse, mainly because of injury, and the fact that a lot of the young guys were probably worn out after pitching deep into the season last year. Andrew Miller was rushed to the majors and he was far from ready, he needed at least one full season in the minors and should have been brought up next season.
The Tigers will be back. A lot of teams have taken a step back after a great year, then had a great year after that. The Tigers really do need to plug some holes, and that could be done by moving Guillen to first and finding a defensive shortstop who can play small ball and make contact, because the Tigers have some guys who strike out a lot.

I hope that the Tigers have enough to reach the Playoffs over the yankees. After watching the 1st game in last nights double header, I'm starting to lose hope. I'm not ready to give up, and I hope the Tigers aren't; either.
Go Tigers!!!
PS. Keep the Tigers away from Ann Arbor (spelling?)

I really don't think they will get into play-offs this year. I also believe that they will be the next 2005 White Sox, I mean they had their shot in 2006 at World Series & now they are falling apart, i realize theyhave had some players injured but then again, that's when the other players are supposed to step up to plate & show what they got as a team. I also believe the Yankees are going to be wild card team but the division is not out of reach. If they don't sweep series with the Red Sox, the division is gone but still able to make play-offs. Maybe next year for Tigers

At this point in the season a team like Detroit has no business losing to a team like Texas at home. Meanwhile the Yankees are sweeping through the soft end of their schedule on the road.
Right now they have about as much fortitude and gumption as the Michigan Wolverines.
It's tough playing out a story in which you already know the ending

I think they still have enough to keep with the Yankees in the race for the wild card but it will take something of a miracle to get them over the top and into the playoffs. THeir pitching staff has more time on the DL than on the can...they have had key components on the shelf for too long (calling Sheffield!) and they seem to have lost a little bit of that edge that they had last year, the chip is off the shoulder, they are a little too complacent in their role as top of the division contenders. Teams that win it all have that chip on their shoulder all year long, battle through adversity and these guys just don't seem to have that extra motivation that they need.

Alas, the curse of the AL Central has hit the Detroit Tigers. As I've said before in previous answers, the 2007 Tigers are remarkably similiar to the 2006 White Sox.
The 2005 White Sox had an amazing year, getting solid pitching, timely hitting, the right breaks, and all the right calls, going on to win the AL Championship and then the World Series.
The 2006 Tigers had an amazing year, getting solid pitching, timely hitting, the right breaks, and all the right calls, going on to win the AL Championship and then an appearance in the World Series.
The 2006 White Sox were a year removed from winning the World Series, they had a successful year yet failed to make the playoffs despite winning 90 games.
The 2007 Tigers are a year removed from a World Series appearance, they had a successful year yet will fail to make the playoffs despite possibly winning 90 games.
The 2007 White Sox in an attempt to silence critics that their World Series was a fluke, stopped doing the things that gave them much success and have only won 61 games this year.
The 2008 Tigers in an attempt to rebound and get back to the World Series will make drastic changes and stop doing what they did in 2006 and will win only 75 games next year.
You cannot deny the similarities.

Georgie, I hope they TIgers have enough in them. The Yankees however, are not only just playing really well right now, they have a soft schedule most of the way out. I would love to see Detroit win the Wild Card, I'm just not so sure I think they can.

They will be fine - next year. They ran out of gas this year. I can't figure out why, except to think that the pitching staff - minus Verlander - is not as good as they played last year.
It is a shame that they have let the Yankees get ahead of them. Everyone said the Wild Card would be out of the Central this year. The Tigers, Twins and Sox let us down for that. If you are looking for blame - blame Neifi..

hopefully enough to get past the Yankees, I wish they played another series the Tigers & Yankees that is.
I want to the Tigers to get in for a few reasons
1. AL Central
2. Indians won't have to play the Red Sox to start the ALDS. Not that the Angels are easy, but the record is better against the Angels (.500 against the Angels)
3. I like most people, who like sports and don't like teams that ruin sports don't like the Yankees.

They show flashes of their first half selves and then the dreadful second half selves re-appear. I, like you, have not given up hope but I am really worried. I guess we have to wait and see and get some help from people like the Red Sox who WERE (but may not now be) the best team in baseball. In any case, it has been a blast this year and it sure looks like it will be next year, too. Now, if only the Lions......
