My wife doesn't partake in Yahoo Answers, but about a year and a half ago, we lost our baby at 17 weeks. Our hospital did not consider it a miscarriage because it was after twelve weeks, but its pretty much the same thing. In our time of healing we discovered the group SHARE and there we met several other people who had lost babies around the 15-20th week. We personnaly chose not to have an optopsy done because after seen the little guy we couldn't bring ourselves to put his little body through it. But until it happens to you, you don't realize how common it is. My wife and I are extremely healthy people who try to work out every now and then, were considered fairly in shape and have no bad habits. Like our best friend said, god may just have had a more important job for our son.

It is not very common. The majority of miscarriage occur within the first 12 weeks of fetal gestation. After the 12th week, the chances of a miscarriage drop to below 10% of all known pregnancies. This fact, however, does not remove the chance of a second trimester miscarriage. Miscarriage occurring in the 2nd trimester of the pregnancy are rare and often unexpected. Hope this helps Good luck and Congrats!!

After the 12th week the risk of miscarriage drops to around 2%, however there is a risk for women for Incompetent cervix which can cause waters to break anywhere from 16-25 weeks. My husband and I lost a baby girl at 21 weeks last Aug due to this.

A statistic I seem to recall is that 90% of miscarriages happen within the 1st 10 weeks.

Less than 20 percent of known micarriages happen after twelve weeks gestation, and your chances of loss decrease with time. It also depends on your age. If you're under 35, you have a 15% chance of loss (during your entire pregnancy), while women over 50 have a 50% chance.

The risk for miscarriage after 12 weeks is 5%. The reasons for miscarriage are different than in early pregnancy and include things like RH disease, infection, placenta problems, incompetant cervix and birth defects.
It is not something to focus on (yeah, difficult), but contrary to the poster above, it is not rare.
