What is the meaning of life... (ranting is excepted)

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

The meaning of life is a topic that just depends on a person's perspective, however I've dedicated a fair amount of time to thinking about it this subject - so here's my perspective.

Everything in the universe, and the universe itself, is born out of a need. All things must have a counterbalance in the universe, and when something must have a counterbalance then either that something ceases to exist or a counterbalance is torn into existence.

So what is our purpose? In my opinion: To experience the universe, or perhaps more specifically, to experience the universe from the small perspective granted here on earth. It is my humble opinion that the existence of life was created out of a need to help substantiate the need for the universe itself - and that the original need that produced the universe is no longer adequate to sustain it's growth and purpose.

Why does the universe need to be experienced? Well everything in the universe can be seen differently from a different perspective. It's easy to lose perspective if you know everything already, and it's difficult to get a sense of how things have changed unless you have a constant feedback. The universe *wants* our perspective so that it can continue to grow - because the universe itself lives.

I believe that's why our lives flash before our eyes before we die - as is so widely experienced by those with near death experiences. It is not we who choose to remember everything in our lives, but rather our entire lives becoming joined with the awareness of the universe - we become part of something greater than ourselves, our perspective becomes joined to the whole, and we cease to exist except as part of that much greater whole.

I wont use terms such as god or heaven just because this isn't a religious debate and I feel it's so much broader than those concepts that to isolate the universe to them would be too restrictive to comprehend whatever might be the truth.

The meaning of life in the personal sense revolves around resolving past issues (karmic debts) and contributing to the system of the world. Leaving an environment without marking it is like walking without a shadow.

The meaning of life is never the same to all people. I think each person finds and gives life meaning by choice of what feels right to them and is based on personal experience, needs, expectations, thought and desire. Maybe - overall caring about something that's bigger than the self is what gives life meaning.

We have to make our own meaning according to what we believe.
Evolution leads us to no meaning, we evolve, live, die and one day go extinct.
Religion leads us to the meaning to find God.
Reincarnation gives us the meaning to live accordingly to come back as something better.
But, regardless of what we believe, as individuals we find meaning in how we interact with others, hate? love? compassion? etc. How we interact with nature, destroy? conserve? ignore? etc.
This just a brief and we could make a long list.
But, it boils down to; We make meaning in our lives as individuals or we make life meaningless.
