I believe long ago, that is what they started with. Well, hundreds of years ago it started in Ireland, the Irish would hollow out Turnips, rutabagas, gourds, potatoes, and beets. When they immigrated to America, they quickly discovered that pumpkins were bigger and easier to carve. So they started using that for Jack-o-lanterns. But the answer to your question, would be, I wouldn't see why not, I mean potatoes and beets has got to be the hardest. So squash would be a little easier, just not as easy as a pumpkin.

Because they cant be hollowed out as easily for carving. Think about it. You just scrape the gunk and seeds out of the pumpkin, but a squash is pretty solid throughout.

Pumpkins were abundent during Harvest. You can use anything you want, but pumpkins are generally used for Halloween.
But, can you think of anything else beside a large squash that you could carve?

What's stopping you from carving a squash? I think that it would be really cool. Go on and use a giant squash! :)

That would be one good way to get rid of those awful tasting veggies! Or is it a fruit? Is pumpkin a fruit? Gee, it's too early to think!
