would biblical style punishments work any better? cutting off thieves hands, cutting off rapists "bits" and the like?

Gut reaction says 'yes' - then I think - what if some girl falsely accused one of my sons of rape?, or what if some mistaken identify affected one of my family - I still feel hard labour is the best form of punishment - at least while that is happening their 'bits' are in tact should any new evidence come to light.
edit : and I do mean Hard Labour - not soft prison

Well the theft punishment is a bit barbaric but I could go for the one for rapists especially paedophiles !

This generation of numb suckles would cut off their own limb and return to their activities. Nothing in some cases deter them even prison.

i say that rapists and child molestors DO need their "bits" cut off-that way they can never do it again!
