In absence of illustrations... examples, the concept of spirituality, ethics and morality do not become clear. Why? It is for the simple reason that spirituality, ethics and morality are deeper subjects... to assimilate the wisdom contained therein is not that easy!
In the present Kali Yuga phase of life (the metal age) it is all the more difficult to practice ethics and morality in life! By depicting the morals of a story through illustrations makes it easier to grasp not only for children but grownups alike!
When we see illustrations of enlightened souls like Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed... we think over the matter again and again! Slowly the concept unfolds before us. Using parables to illustrate ethics and morality is common!
Stories and examples when quoted have a moral bearing on the hearer! It is a kind of affirmation of truth! When an enlightened soul illustrates before the community stories of ones life... people believe in the fact... the narrated truth!
To assimilate the pearls of wisdom contained in sacred scriptures... storytelling is the best form of depicting the wisdom contained therein! Whatever be the mode... the primary goal of every storyteller is wisdom reaching the commoner!
In the present times illustrations in movies greatly helps spreading the messages of the enlightened masters... those who have gained enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and salvation (moksha) in their journey of life! More on Enlightened Beings - http://www.godrealized.com/enlightenedbeings.html

there are two reasons why stories are used to illustrate ethics. firstly concrete examples in a story can illuminate the abstract reasoning behind an ethics very clear , especially for the uninitiated. secondly stories both show and remind that ethics is not merely some abstract code of philosophy, that it has practical value in the world.

Ethics is normally a dry subject to discuss, and it is difficult to hold the listener's attention. A story at the beginning generates a certain amount of interest in the listener's mind, and he pays more attention/
