My son came up with an extrodinary idea this morning. I want to copyright it. What should I do?

It is called 'Intellectual Property'.
You can patent it. Check with your local office on how to do this.
Don't tell anyone! Tell your son not to tell anyone. It can void the patent.

copyright has to do with authored works, for example a written story or a painting. The idea for the story or the picture is not covered by copyright. The copyright for authored work is automatic once in fixed form.

Methods and processes of doing thinks or manufactured products may qualify for a patent. A patent must be completely novel and you may find that someone else may have had a similar idea before. Patents are not automatic, and require a lot of legal proceedures to establish.

Just tell me what it is, and I'll do the rest.

Or ideally, contact the patent office. Make sure you know your idea and you can clearly explain it.
