Recently when I was in a store a guy came up behind me wanting to get by and said, "excuse me miss." I know I turned red and all I could think to do was step aside. Meanwhile the girl that was helping me cracked a big smile and turned away from me while she composed herself.

I was really troubled by this and have thought about how I can change my wardrobe (I was wearing board shorts and a t-shirt and flip-flops at the time), shaving my head (I have blonde hair that is longish but still above my shoulder). I don't have heavy facial hair so growing a beard or mostache is not an option.

Am I right to be upset over this and if so how do I stop it from happening again?

Yes, You have a right to be upset over it. But changing your look doesn't mean that you will necessary stop it, It happens sometimes to all of us. You never know the guy might have needed some glasses.

I don't think your wardrobe is the problem, to tell you the truth. If you want to make sure people see you as male, cut your hair in a distinctly male fashion. Facial hair is not a must, so no worries about that.

Hope this helps!

Get thicker skin or a haircut.

Look at some guys with long hair from the back; it's hard to tell gender - and some girls look like guys.

I go with get thicker skin.

Don't be upset! It used to happen to me all the time (mistaken for a boy, that is). That was until my breasts grew...

Next time, ignore him, or turn around and say "I think you've got it wrong, mate" then wait for his apology. I bet he'd be more embarrassed than you...

The ACTUAL issue is that you don't want to be mistaken for a girl, which is a sign of weakness and could lead to your oppression...

Get a buzz cut. Also go to a tattoo shop near a navy base.

Just go emo--the whole androgyny thing is really hot right now. Just look at the lead singer for Fallout Boy.

Will I have been mistaken for being human on occasion, so I don't think you should worry too much.

People often make mistakes, especially people with bad eyesight, how do you know he wan't a Mr Magoo?
