Nelson Mandela. He is practically a living saint. Here is why. He was imprisoned for years by the apartheid regime of South Africa and lost what for most people would be the best years of their lives due to this attempt to silence and isolate him. When apartheid collapsed from the international sanctions against that regime as well as the horrendous economic burden of trying to keep a majority population in servitude, Mandela was released from prison. Far from being bitter from the experience, he forgave his jailers, insisted there be no revenge, and the new South Africa he led as President became a shining light to the world on how reconciliation can be a force for renewal. The moral example that Mandela set was amazing. An event that typified his magnanimity was when the South African rugby team -- the Springboks -- won an international championship. Mandela donned the Springbok colors and went into the field to congratulate its captain. I do not recall the exact exchange of words, but it went something like this.
Mandela: "Captain, on behalf of all South Africans I thank you and your team for the honor you have brought us." Captain: "Mr President, on behalf of all of us, I thank you for all that you have done for our country". Now, you have to understand that rugby is as close to a religion there as you can get, and also that up to that point it was considered a white man's sport and the Springboks were once the symbol of apartheid when it went on tour overseas. In one symbolic gesture of the greatest generosity, Mandela had embraced the Springboks as the team of all South Africans, black and white. As if this kind of wisdom is not enough, here is the clincher. The moment he could give up the Presidency he did! He relinquished power when his word would have been command. In retirement now, he remains a towering exemplar of the best in public service.
