While I don't believe it 100%, I feel an argument can be made that the media turned on Britney Spears.

I totally agree with that but think about what the media can do, I can't think of a musical example for a great example is Anglina Jolie. She's adultress, she not only broke up one of america's most beloved couples, but she's young and been sort of shady in the past. In every other case the tabloids would have ridiculed here and ruined she career, but instead they started calling her Angie (which you never heard before any of this and is much more approachable than Anglina), and they talked about all the great humanitarian things she does and said what a great love story it was. It's not a love story at all, but because of the way the tabloids talked about it it didn't ruined her career, in fact she's more famous now than before. Or Anna Nicole she was trash to the media then she died an they painted an entirely different picture. The media can do anything.

lovnrckets got my answer. The Dixie Chicks were lambasted by the media over their comments... which is odd considering that the media is usually more inclined to go to the left. Had the comments made about Bush been made in the US, or not so soon after 9/11, they probably would not have received anywhere near as much heat.

John Lennon did get quite a backlash after the "Jesus" comments... especially in the south. (Maybe one day we'll lighten up as a culture down here.)

Michael Jackson has taken some pretty big hits in the press, but that of course was his own doing. I'm very surprised that Pete Townshend hasn't gotten much backlash from the kiddie porn found on his computer a few years back.

Good answers from lovnrckets and Suzanne.

How about Vanilla Ice? I'm sure he's ultimately responsible for his downfall, but I don't think the media helped him.

The media certainly turned on R. Kelly, didn't it?

EDIT: I just thought of another one: Jerry Lee Lewis.

An argument can also be made for The Dixie Chicks.
