they all know some, and some know a lot, for example schumacher was said by shell to be able to tell when they were experimenting with a new crank shaft lubricant, is input and knowledge in developing the car is a big reason why they won 5 championships in a row, one of the draw backs to going with kimi was that hes not really that interested in development and would rather just race the car, and i think you can see the difference this season, alonso was a big factor in renaults development program and see what happened to them when he left, now can the rewire the cars electronics? i doubt it but I'll bet a few of them like alex wurze could rebuild the engine

Some drivers drives the car, and some them creates it. This is the big difference.
See what happened to Renault after Alonso left. And You can also check out how Schumacher changed Ferrari cars. All big drivers work like an mechanic engineer, collect the information about the car, know the advantages and disadvantages of the car and help modifying it. That's why we call them great drivers.
But also there are ones who are just 'drivers' they just drives the car and they are the ones who will always remain as just 'drivers'.

They'll need to know a lot about the mechanical data to be able to bring the best out of their cars. They need to work with their mechanics and discuss about tyre-usage, suspension, fuel load, etc, though drivers like Ferrari man Kimi Raikkonen do not usually discuss with their mechanics and only drive the car, and still obtain relatively good results. When driving, they're the man behind the wheel, the steering wheel is a fantastic device that shows every information about the state of the car, and they need some basic knowledge to be able to bring the maximum out of their cars.

They would know about it, because they have been racing in some kind of Formula series right from their childhood. But how best they can interpret it and suggest something constructive is upto the driver.

They probably know and should know! Else they are not qualified to be called an F1 driver. If they do not know their stuff, they'll have to rely on other people to tell them and that is definitely not good.

I really don't know, but I think they do. But not much. Maybe they know about their car just like a normal driver knows about their car?
PS. What happened the other day? Did I do something? Or was it power shortage?

hi schumi reckon they have a major part to play in giving info to mechanics and designers which electronics dont and cant give,so I must assume they are a major part of the whole shebang andknow almost as much as the mechanics.
