I just read the full article concerning the Hurricane Air filter and it looks and sounds like a more cautious approach to intake air filtration. I'm not sure of the cost of the complete filter replacement but items they raised about the mass-air flow sensor contamination while using a filter such as a K&N gause/screen oil wetted type makes perfect sense.
Although I completely wash, clean and re-oil my K&N filters yearly I've been accustomed to a few re-oiling tricks. I still have the squeeze bottles of N&N oil which is somewhat tricky to apply. It's easy to over-oil these pleated gause / wire panals. I let mine dry in the heat of the Sun while suspended off a white terry cloth buffing towel. This way, if there's any excess oil it can drain through to the cloth and I can monitor any excessive oil droplets. I simply wipe the droplets off and let it drain further.
Today, K&N has an aresol can of the red oil to make it easier to apply a fresh charge.
One thing has always concerned me with any high flow air cleaner. When you hold it to the Sun you can see tiny air holes in it. None of these companies publish the micron filtration particle sizes they stop. One of my cars has had a K&N for 80,000 miles. It's a 24 valve Duratec Ford 3.0 motor. It uses not a drop of oil between my "old lady" 3,000 mile oil and filter changes. I assume the cylinders and piston rings haven't been abraded enough to cause excess oil consumtion.
