stage directions are just that: directions as experienced by the actors on the stage (when they are in their normal, audience-facing orientation). The directions on the stage as seen from the audience are called HOUSE directions, so stage left (the left exit as experience from the stage) is house right. The difference only becomes important to techies who might be working the front of the house (lighting and sound guys).

"Stage" directions (stage left, stage right, etc) are in relation to the actor, ie facing toward the audience from the stage.

"House" directions (house right/house left) are in relation to the audience, facing toward the stage from the house.

it's called "stage left" because it's the left side of the stage in relation to you.
