There are no species of reptile that are exempt from licensing. This link has the list of species that you are allowed to keep with a class one license. Try to remember to mention that you are in Australia when you post questions, otherwise the responses will be of little use to you.

Unless I am completely misunderstanding your question, I am pretty sure (at least in Canada and the US) that you can own gecko's without a licence. I personally own 5 crested geckos. Leopard geckos are also common. A little less common, but very intriguing, are the leaftail geckos :)

I've never heard of needing a license but I've only been to petco they sell different types of geckos usually three different types at a time. you can find where there store is at there website www.petco.com
