When you start the divorce your attorney will tell you that either one of you have to leave the house, move elsewhere...In the document you sign you have to say that you have been apart for a certain length of time, and that the marriage is irretrievably broken. You can't stay in the same place because then the marriage won't be irretrievably broken because being human will continue to take place. In a divorce you would say that you won't bother each other anymore.

It depends on the grounds for divorce and the laws of your specific state.

In my state in order to receive a no-fault divorce you must be separated--which means *separate residence*…no living at the same address--for a full year.

My sister in law and her soon to be ex lived apart in the same house for years and in fact still do. Divorce is final in three weeks. Separate bedrooms and separate lives is what is required for a divorce, not necessarily separate residences.
