Any tips would help; I'm starting to think it's a lost cause. I tend to go through more clothes than I should because of my ineptitude at laundry...I know it's not rocket science, but I tend to be the first person to ruin laundry.

It is easy to miss a stain and then discover you have a huge mark on your favourite t-shirt or pair of pants. It depends on the fabric you are dealing with and the kind of stain.

A lot of stains respond well to a soak in some napisan or other soaking solution. And there are terrific commercial stain removers.

Blood - can be removed with a cold salt water solution. BUT if the stain has really set then you make a paste with powdered borax and brush it off once its dried.

Oil - rub the stain with a bar of soft soap and rub well into the fabric. Then launder as usual. You can also use dishwashing detergent the same way.

Ink/ Biro - If the stain is fairly new, then dabbing the mark with methylated spirits and blotting both sides can work well. Or you can spray more stubborn marks liberally with hairspray and then launder as usual.

Lipstick - Dab the mark with eucalyptus oil then wash with Woolmix.

And for those stubborn stains where your garment is ruined if you can't remove the stain - then I always fall back on soaking in a cold Napisan solution or if the garment is white weak bleach - and then washing and rewashing...

Hope this helps,
Happy washing :-)

I like to use full-strenth detergent on my stains.. When I bring the hamper down I have a system of sorting the clothing.. Lights, Darks, Delicates, Towels, Kids, Linens etc.... I'll usually run the linens first if they are light colored on Hot/cold perm/press... I use reg. detergent and add 1 c. of baking soda to the wash water.. It helps the detergent work better....

While that's filling/running... I go through each pile and inspect each garment. Especially the kids/husbands clothing.. I will spot treat with SHOUT/ SPRAY n WASH and let it sit... When it's time for a particular load I will let it SOAK for about 30 min and then run... That will usually take care of any stains.. Also, I've had luck with "set in " stains by re-washing the garmetn after I've rubbed full-strength detergent into it... It depends on the fabric though....
