As you may have guessed, I'm a student at one of the universities in these places and I'd like to be able to visit a friend at the university in the other.

I've been trying to figure out the most cheap/efficient way to travel between Stanford and Davis. We'll need to use public transportation, since neither of us has a car or a great deal of money to spend on cabs). Ideally, I'd like a route with as few transfers as possible, but any suggestions or advice will be gratefully accepted.

From Davis take the Capital Corridor train to Richmond. From Richmond take Bart to the Millbrae station.
From Millbrae take Cal-Train to Palo Alto.
Stanford is a short walk from the station.

Total cost should be around $40.00 round trip.

Travel time should be around 3 hours.

I live in Sacramento, my parents live on the Peninsula I use this method to go vist them about once a month.

When you take into account gas prices and bridge tolls its cheaper than driving.

Do not forget to buy your BART ticket on the Amtrack train you get a $10.00 ticket for $8.00.

Have fun.

It's a long way from Palo Alto to Davis (104 miles).

I wouldn't do this sort of trip all the time. And unless you plan on a very brief visit, I'd definitely consider staying overnight. The travel time is easily 4 hours each way, if you include the waiting.

By rail, with one transfer:

1. Caltrain to San Jose. $4.00 one-way. Duration: 31 minutes [local train] / 20 minutes [express train].

2. Amtrak to Davis. Cost - $26.00 one-way. Duration: 2 hours 50 minutes.

Your total cost per person is $30.00 each way.

Your two best modes would be AMTRAK or the Greyhound Bus Service. Take a local bus to the BART station in Fremont and connect with AMTRAK in Richmond (alongside the Richmond BART station)
I believe you can p/u Greyhound in PA or SF and head for Davis also

And taking into account SFdude's excellent information, it might be more efficient to rent a car. Granted, it would be a bit more, but the time and hassle saved would be worth it.
