You DON'T set up the network key on your laptop, but on your wireless ROUTER. Your laptop only connects to and uses already existing security settings (automatically).

If you are asking how to set up encryption on your wireless network (router), that's a different kind of question. The answer is RTFM (google up this abbrev.) that comes with your router. It's called wireless security and the most commonly used encryption is WPA2 - Personal (TKIP)

First off: there are a few types of encryption out there. I'm not going to tell you what's different about them, just pick one that both your laptop and your router have.
Next you will need a password. I like the password generators at http://www.pctools.com/guides/password/ .
Then you give both the laptop and the router the same password and that's about it. If this isn't specific enough you should find someone who knows computers to help you.

the os does not matter, you need to enable wep or whatever security feature your router has, set the key, then connect your laptop using the same key.
