How can I cover a wooden desk top with leather? Are there any special folding techniques etc that I need to know? Also, are there any natural (and zero VOC) alternatives to synthetic adhesive for this purpose?

Finally, does anyone know how/where to buy low-grade leather in large quantities for this purpose? The only leather I have found thus far has been in clothing ... I need it in sheet form.

Thanks.

You need to buy what are known as skivers which is leather that is cut very thin for this purpose. It is quite a tricky job doing this sort of work and needs the correct adhesives. It is really best left ot a professional furniture restorer to do the work.

If avoiding VOC's is a must, you might want to consider nailing the leather onto the desk with furniture brads (often seen on leather upholstered chairs for example) Any furniture supply store, and many hobby suppliers can provide several types of these brads. You can even get them in strips, where, instead of every single one being a nail, only every 5th, or so, is a nail, and the rest are decorative trim (speeds up the process, heheh)

For a desk top, I would seriously consider using a very thick piece of leather, for durability.

no no no don't do that, i used to work in a floor coverings shop and vinyl should really only be used underfoot. although if you did like the tiled look, there is a hige variety of laminex panel to chooce from which you can get from any cabinet maker. I'm not sure how much it costs though, but the finished product is amazing.

is this a re-cover or is this just an idea you've had to just cover a table with leather.
if this is just an idea, remember you have to trim out the area of the table top you intend to cover, so when the leather is in place, the table top is still flush. this will be a job in itself.
fixing the leather is really a job for a professional, it's not really a diy job.
