On a news report last evening there was a story on Southall a place in London. The station name was in English and underneath in Punjabi. The area is quite a multi racial area so i guess the local council thought we have to please people by putting the station name in Punjabi as well, now the upshot is that other ethnic groups have complained, why can't they have the station name in their languages too, you can imagine how big the sign will end up as, and as i was watching i thought why should it be in any language other than English, what has happened to common sense. Even the newsreader said he thought it was political correctness gone mad. A straw poll from people said as i would, if you went to another country you wouldn't expect to see all the signs in English, so why should we pander to people who don't or won't speak the language. I am not a racist, i know we can all say that, but i cannot understand this at all.

Perhaps if the gentleman below could translate his answer i could give a rating. And quite frankly if i went to live abroad i would try and learn the language, preferably before going. I appreciate that it's now a multi cultural society but this sort of thing alienates people more than you can know.

A friend of mine said it best...
She was from India..
She told me her parents were very strict and when she and her brother wanted to visit the world.. this is what Her Father told her...
Before you enter a country...
Learn their language
Get a job first thing.. so you will have money that you have earned and not begged for..
Follow their rules and laws.
Remember you are entering their country and they are gracious enough to accept you..
Always be a asset and never be a burden!!
She knew 7 languages, was very educated..and worked hard..
Her dad was a very smart man... don't you agree?

Yup...saw this bit of news too.
Personally, I think there's sooo much political correctness involved. I myself 'speak' an Asian language but English is my MAIN spoken one.We live in a multi cultural society and here in London we see people of MANY different background who speaks soooo many languages. I think some councils have just gone over the top with all this. Maybe because Southall has a large Punjabi community there, but then again I also noticed in another part of London (Whitechapel) there is a large Bangladeshi community, and the hospital there has sign posted in their own language....this is a personal view too, I hope it doesnt cause offence to anyone out there, but its important to have a certain basic understanding of the language of your host country too if people are happy to come and reside in England. It is also not fair as there are other communities out there who may well ask why not have signs posted in their own language as well.English is a global language, it is widely spoken throughout the world too.

Because we live in a society where things aren't done for the reason common sense would have you believe. That sign was probably put up so that the local councillor can score points with the local population. The world has become too dishonest.

I agree. Each nation should have one language, and if you want to live and/or work in that country you should know the language. But seriously, is there a nation that actually uses just one language? Racial intolerance issues will continue till the end of the world.

Have a nice day.
