lithosphere, athenosphere, crust, mantle, core? which one?

I think the question is looking for mantle. The layers of the mantle are all chemically similar, but have differing physical properties depending on how deep they are. The asthenosphere is one of those chemically-identical, yet physically-distinct layers in the mantle.

Or it might be looking for crust, since it is largely just chemical differences that distinguish it from the rest of the lithosphere.

I guess I would need to get clarification on just which way the question is being asked.
