As I remember it, pretty much to see if it could be done. There was a period when anatomy was first being studied that exhuming cadavers was common practice, there started a LOT of urban legend about if they could be reanimated. Many people believed if the heart could pump it might be possible.

The story reflects that OLD fear and curiosity.

I think the first answer has it..

The book was an attempt to show that just because we CAN do something, doesn't mean we SHOULD.. so the doctor does it just because he can.
