My housemate's laptop DVD player won't let her change the region that it's set to anymore; after 5 changes, that's it. She has traveled a lot and made those changes, but now she's stuck with a DVD player that won't play any more disks. It doesn't look like there's anything that can be done about this. Why are they made with such a stupid restriction?

It is the same with DVD drives for desktop. You should not be changing it always.

This is done to control movies. Basically, the MPAA and various recording companies do not want DvDs sold in other countries imported and sold here for cheap.

For example, If I go to a third world country, I can buy DVDs really cheaply - bring them back to the United States and sell them for double. The MPAA frowns upon this - thats mostly why region codes are used.
